How to Help Your Community During the COVID-19 Pandemic

By April 30, 2020Featured, Uncategorized

During these times of uncertainty, one thing you can know for sure is that there are plenty of people who could use some help. If you are in a position to help others, there are plenty of options. With Ohio’s stay-at-home order effective through May 2020 and a significant portion of the population falling into a “higher risk” category, there are some ways you can help without having to step foot out of your home.

Help Feed the Hungry

Millions of Americans have filed for unemployment throughout the pandemic. To make matters worse, food banks have received less donations from manufacturers in this increased time of need. Follow this link to Feeding America’s Food Bank locator tool. https://www.feedingamerica.org/find-your-local-foodbank Once you enter your zip code, you will find links to either “volunteer”, “find food”(for those in need), or “give locally”. You can make monetary donations online without leaving your home

Donate Blood

The American Red Cross has had to cancel over 12,000 scheduled blood drives due to COVID-19 resulting in a major shortage of donations. If you are young, healthy and not in the high-risk category, consider scheduling an appointment at a location near you. American Red Cross locations are following strict guidelines as outlined by the CDC to provide a safe environment for blood donors.

Supporting Independent Contractors & Domestic Services

Those who find themselves unemployed during the COVID-19 crisis may be trying to supplement income by doing things like online exercise classes, yard work, or grocery shopping through companies like Shipt and Instacart. Consider using some of these services if your budget allows.

Support Local Businesses

Many small businesses have adapted in ways that allows them to survive through the challenges that this pandemic is bringing them. Bars and restaurants may not be open for dine in just yet, but many are open for takeout. If you can tip extra and are happy with the service you receive, consider tipping extra. Losing dine-in options significantly impacts the income of those serving in the food industry. If ordering takeout is not comfortable for you, consider buying a gift card for later use.
